Winter Season and Your Roof

During the winter months, roofs undergo aging and damage that is not normally seen, like that during a windy and raining season. The warmth of our homes in the winter tend to keep us inside rather than out and it is then that the unseen damage is done.  With that on your mind, Houston roofing when it is cold outside is one of the last things you want to do.  However, proper preparation will keep you off of your roof and in your cozy home.

Ice

Ice can cause warpage of rafters, trusses, and roofing shingles. Ice accumulation on your roof not only raises your heating bills, but when the shingle is warped enough, the melting ice will cause a small leak behind the warped shingle.

One way to help prevent ice build-up on your Houston roof is to make sure that you have an attic ventilation system installed. Attic ventilation systems help to circulate air in and out of your house. The constant circulation of air helps to prevent ice from forming on your roof.

Even though Texas roofs tend to not see a lot of ice, a ventilation system will bring you added benefits during the summer months as well; lowering your overall energy consumption by as much as 30%.

Clogged Drainage

Here in Texas we know that it may freeze one night and completely melt the next day. That runoff always needs a way to leave the roof. Leaves, sticks, branches, and other debris, usually from the Fall, will clog your gutters, roof valleys, and downspouts.

Even though it may be tedious clearing of your gutters, downspouts, and valleys will save you on costly repairs later. The build-up will slowly eat away at your roofing materials, causing a leak to form, and bigger problems later on.

Be sure to inspect your gutter attachment to the roof. A secure gutter will make sure that water and moisture is funneled from the house and roof correctly. If a gutter is not properly secure, water can leak to the ground surrounding the base of your house. Over time this water can potentially cause structural damage.

Bad Flashing

Flashing, the aluminum pieces often used to protect roofing edges, can often become damaged or worn over time. Improper installation happens often as well. Even though bad flashing may seem like a minor issue, it is best to fix it right away. Flashing is often the only layer between your house and the outside water. A slow leak can cause unintended moisture consequences like mold as well.

To prevent bad flashing installation, use a qualified and certified Houston roofer. The cost of replacing or fixing flashing is nothing in comparison to your long term costs of replacing an entire roof.
